Engineer Assessment

An independent engineer’s assessment is usually the first step towards getting your vehicle repaired properly, or valued fairly if it can’t be.

After a non-fault accident, Simply Accident Management arranges for a qualified, independent engineer to inspect your vehicle and prepare a report that supports the next stage of your claim.

What the assessment covers

The engineer inspects your vehicle, records the accident-related damage and photographs it. Their report usually sets out:

  • the damage caused by the accident;
  • the repairs needed and their estimated cost;
  • whether the vehicle is economical to repair;
  • the vehicle’s pre-accident value, if it may be a total loss;
  • the likely salvage category, if it is written off;
  • whether the vehicle is safe and roadworthy in the meantime.

Why an independent report matters

The at-fault insurer may inspect your vehicle or rely on its own engineers. An independent report gives your claim its own evidence of the damage and of the work that is reasonably required.

It also keeps things moving. Repairs generally can’t be authorised until the damage has been assessed, and a total-loss settlement depends on an agreed valuation.

How it works

📅

Inspection arranged

We arrange for the engineer to inspect the vehicle wherever it is being kept, such as a storage yard or repairer.

📸

Damage recorded

The engineer examines and photographs the damage, and looks for signs of hidden damage that may need further checks.

📋

Report prepared

The report sets out the repair method and costs, or the pre-accident value if the vehicle isn’t economical to repair.

🔧

Claim moved on

We use the report to authorise repairs with the repairer, or to pursue a fair valuation if the vehicle is a total loss.

If your vehicle is a total loss

Where repairs would cost more than the vehicle is reasonably worth, the engineer assesses its pre-accident value, and that valuation forms the basis of the settlement.

If you think the valuation doesn’t reflect your vehicle, for example because of its specification, mileage, condition or recent work, tell us and send any supporting evidence, such as adverts for similar vehicles, service history or receipts.

After the assessment

Once repairs are authorised, we coordinate with the repairer through to completion. If your vehicle is off the road and you have a genuine need for temporary transport, we can also assess whether a replacement vehicle is appropriate.

Not always. An independent assessment gives your claim its own evidence of the damage and repair costs, which can help if the insurer’s figures are lower or the damage is disputed. We’ll tell you whether one is needed in your case.
It depends on where the vehicle is and the engineer’s availability. We arrange the inspection as quickly as we can once we’re instructed, and keep you updated until the report is in.
Only if it’s safe and roadworthy. If you’re unsure, for example because of warning lights or damage to the lights, tyres, wheels or suspension, don’t drive it. Tell us and we can arrange recovery.
Tell us why and send any supporting evidence, such as adverts for comparable vehicles, service records or receipts for recent work. We’ll use it to challenge the valuation where it’s appropriate to do so.
